Forests & Communities Initiative at the New York Climate Week 2024
News
We are thrilled to share the success of our recent event, "Voices of the Forest: From Indigenous Advocacy to Conservation Action", held during Climate Week NYC at the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the United Nations.
This inspiring gathering opened with remarks from Olivier Wenden, CEO of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, and Gab Mejia, a National Geographic Explorer and fellow of the 2024 Re.Generation cohort.
Their words set the stage for an afternoon filled with powerful insights and transformative discussions. The event’s highlights included captivating fireside chats with Sonia Guajajara, Brazilian Minister of Indigenous Peoples and TIME100 Honoree, Nemonte Nenquimo, Waorani leader and TIME100 Honoree, and Mitch Anderson, founder of Amazon Frontlines and co-author of "We Will Be Jaguars". These distinguished leaders shared their experiences, challenges, and victories in advancing Indigenous-led conservation initiatives.
A dynamic panel discussion, moderated by Andrew Heinrich, brought together Hugo Jabini, Saramaka Maroon leader; Jennifer Tauli Corpuz, a global Indigenous rights advocate; and Nemonte Nenquimo. The conversation delved into how Indigenous leadership can redefine and strengthen forest conservation efforts worldwide.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all speakers and partners for their invaluable contributions to this impactful event. Together, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting forests and uplifting Indigenous communities.
